FAQ

When Should you join A club?

The biggest indicator is that you'd like some more time on the ice! You can be at any level of skating.

Being a member gives you access to contract specific ice time every week (renewed on a quarterly basis). That ice time will let you expand on your skills and work with a coach.

Being a member will allow enroll you as an US Figure Skating Member that opens all kinds of options for testing and competing as well.

Don't forget the camaraderie and club events as extra perks!

MEMBERSHIP FEES

A good portion of your member fees go to US Figure Skating Association so you are registered concurrently (this is for tracking, insurance, etc). The rest goes towards subsidizing ice fees with only a tiny portion for a banquet dinner for the skater and a t-shirt.

It is important to us that we keep membership rates down and so we do rely on fundraising to help fulfill losses on ice time cost.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Don't already have an idea of who you want for a coach from skating lessons? Reach out to our available coaches to see who is the best fit for your skater and work out scheduling within our TRFSC ice contract times.

Arrange for some time on the ice buy purchasing non-member random ice (must at least be a US Figure Skating Member) for a trial OR register for the discounted introductory membership to get your ice discounts right away.

HOW MUCH DOES SKATING IN A CLUB COST?

Most of the cost of skating is to cover ice time.

Lessons

Many start only once weekly in combination with a recreation department offered group class. More advanced students will contract for several times a week. Current charges in the area are $20 or less per hour for ice.

You'll get a several dollar discount if you contract ice with a club. Our club also offers an opportunity to earn ice credits when working in concessions.

Coach Fees

Often start in 15 - 20 minute increments. Ranges based on experience and if they are a full time coach.

Here are some things to also budget for:

Necessities:

Skates

Starts in the $100 - $300 range. Sometimes more for advanced skaters. Skates are custom fitted as possible for safety and performance, but this can be done in used pairs which are generally available in the smaller/beginner sizes.)

Sharpening

Every 3 - 6 months. Generally runs close to $20. Best done at a figure skating specific site if beyond beginner levels.

Skating socks

Socks made of thicker like tights material. Widely available for less than $15 a pair.

Competitive Events/Testing *Optional

Competition Fees

Range from less than $100 to up to $200 for entry and 1 event. Your coach will be there supporting your skater and spending time arranging music - they will charge some for these services. Be aware that coaches will split total travel and accommodation costs among skater at farther events and this can add up.

Testing

Usually around $50-100.

Performance Wear

Can range widely, but even if you want a bedazzled competition dress, you may be able to borrow or certainly spend $100 or less if you resourceful. Ask around, check shops based on your coach's recommendation and search widely on the web. Just caution - there are different styles of dress and some may not meet requirements. Some buy simpler dresses and then pay someone from the club to add sequins for additional cost but this isn't necessary.

Typically you get new performance wear for each routine and that may last you a year.
